The motif is believed to originate from the ancient Guta Saga where the woman Vitastjerna dreams of giving birth to three snakes. Her husband interpreted the dream with the words: "Everything is bound in circles. We shall build on this land and have three sons". The depicted woman is thus connected to fertility.
